Teaching the Materials Science, Engineering, and Field Aspects of Concrete

The Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials (ACBM) and the Portland Cement Association (PCA) are pleased to host the Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement Workshop, July 14-16, 2008, at the PCA headquarters in Skokie, Illinois. The Faculty Workshop will address the issues of adding and expanding coverage of concrete materials properties in undergraduate and graduate courses and laboratories.

The goal of the workshop is to provide a forum to introduce the most current research and practice in concrete materials properties to civil engineering, architectural, and construction management programs. Participants will learn how to effectively facilitate teaching of concrete, see demonstrations and hear explanations on student laboratory experiments, and exchange information on successful implementation of concrete-related subject matter into curricula.

The cost of registration for the Workshop is $195.00 and includes all hand-out materials, PCA literature, lunches, and dinner on July 15. Additional evening meal tickets for adult guests can be purchased for the Tuesday night (July 15) dinner at Maggiano's Little Italy in Skokie. Registration information can be submitted through the internet (http://www.cement.org/learn/acbm_08workshop.asp).

  Location and Facilities

The Workshop will be held at the PCA Headquarters in Skokie, Illinois. Laboratory demonstrations will be conducted at construction Technology Laboratories.

  Housing
Overnight accommodations can be made at the Hampton Inn, Skokie, Illinois (847.583.1111), which is located directly across from the PCA campus. The rate at the Hampton is $99.00 per night (plus tax). Reservations should be made directly with the hotels. Participants should mention that they are attending the ACBM Workshop to receive the workshop rate. To secure these special rates, participants must call the Hampton. Transportation is provided from the hotels to all meeting locations and to the O'Hare airport at the end of the program on Wednesday.
  Financial Support
Regional cement shipper groups may provide funds to faculty memebers to help offset the cost of registration, travel, and room and board. Registration forms of those wishing to be considered for support will be forwarded to the appropriate shipper group. ACBM and PCA are not responsible for financial support.
The Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement Workshop Series began in 1992. The series was established to meet a need which was recognized in a 1987 report titled “Concrete and Durability: A Multi-Billion Dollar Opportunity,” published by the National Materials Advisory Board. The report findings indicated the failings of the industry in advancing the durability, performance, and service-ability of concrete. The report also held the university education system accountable for the decline in advancement due to the lack of emphasis on cement-based research in undergraduate curricula.

The goal of the UFE Workshop Series is to expose faculty members to new teaching methods for incorporating concrete technology into their curriculum, to expose participants to cutting-edge research techniques and results so as to integrate research into teaching, and to facilitate a dialogue between representatives from academia and industry on current industry issues. The ACBM / PCA Workshop is the only one that addresses the materials science aspects of cement and concrete science.
