| ACBM: Worldwide leaders in new technology |
ACBM was established in 1989 as a National
Science Foundation Science and Technology Center, dedicated
to the cement and concrete industries. By
focusing on research, education, and technology transfer, ACBM
has contributed major advances in the knowledge of cement and
concrete materials and their behavior.
Hundreds of students and visiting scholars have participated
in research at ACBM and have gone on to careers in industry
and academia to continue this important work. We conduct annual
workshops for faculty from colleges and universities nationwide
on state-of-the-art cement and concrete technology. ACBM has
established a strong interaction with companies, associations
and government agencies. Many companies have adopted and optimized
new technologies based on expertise developed through collaborative
efforts with ACBM. |
| Cement Research Response to a real
world need |
Much of the way we
live depends on concrete. Our houses, roads, cities and underground
support systems are all structured from this uncommonly common
material. This concrete infrastructure is gradually crumbling.
Trillions of dollars will be required over the next 20 years
to repair cement and concrete structures. More importantly,
the need for stronger and more durable cement-based materials
has never been more critical.
The Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials (ACBM)
was founded to address this major need. We are comprised of
outstanding scientists and engineers from Northwestern University,
the University of Illinois, Purdue University, the University
of Michigan and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Our purpose is to improve and enhance the performance of vital
construction materials. |
